Water Pooling on Sunken Concrete

Standing water on a slab is both a symptom and a cause. The slab settled, so water collects; the water then keeps moving material beneath the slab, so the settlement continues. That loop is the reason drainage cannot be treated as cosmetic.

What the water is telling you

Exterior slabs are poured with fall so water runs off. Once a section settles, the slope in that area changes — and can reverse. Water then collects in the low spot, or worse, runs back toward the structure.

A puddle that sits for a day after rain is a reasonable indicator that the surface no longer drains as it was built to.

The feedback loop

Settlement creates a low spot. The low spot holds water. Water beneath and beside the slab keeps moving fine material. Support is lost further, and the slab settles more. In a climate with real freeze-thaw cycling, saturated ground beneath the slab is worked repeatedly, which contributes to the same process.

What leveling can and cannot fix

Leveling can

Restore elevation and, with it, the slope the slab had before it settled — removing a low spot that settlement created and stopping water from running the wrong way across the surface.

Leveling cannot

Create fall on a slab that was poured flat, redirect a downspout, fix site grading, add a drain that does not exist, or reduce how much water arrives at the slab in the first place.
If water is reaching your foundation, treat that as its own item alongside any slab work. Where the source is grading, gutters or a buried drain, that work determines whether the slab repair holds.

Practical steps before you get quotes

  • Watch the slab during rain and note where water arrives from and where it goes.
  • Photograph standing water and mark how long it takes to clear.
  • Check downspout discharge points — are any of them landing on the slab?
  • Look at the ground beside the slab for erosion channels or washed-out base.
  • Note whether the water is running toward the house, the garage, or simply pooling.

Include that in your request so providers can price the cause as well as the symptom.

How long should water take to drain off a slab?

There is no single number, and it depends on the slab and the rain. Water still standing well after a rain has stopped indicates the surface is holding it rather than shedding it.

Will lifting my patio stop water reaching the basement?

It can stop the slab surface directing water at the wall. Whether that resolves the basement issue depends on everything else feeding water to that spot, which needs onsite assessment.

Do I fix the drainage or the slab first?

Providers often address them together, and it is worth asking each one how they would sequence it. Lifting a slab while a downspout still discharges onto it is the version to avoid.
