Concrete Void Filling: Restoring What the Slab Rests On

A slab spanning empty space is a different problem from a slab sitting low. Void filling is about support rather than elevation — and it is often the substantive part of work that gets sold as leveling.

What a void under a slab is

Concrete slabs on grade are designed to rest on the ground continuously. When soil beneath a slab moves, compresses or washes out, part of that contact is lost and a gap opens. The slab is then bridging — carrying load across the gap instead of transferring it into the ground.

A slab can bridge a void for a long time before anything visible happens. Then it cracks, drops, or both, usually where a load crosses the unsupported area.

How support gets lost

Water and erosion

Water moving under or alongside a slab carries fine material with it. Repeated over seasons, that is the most common way a void forms — concentrated roof discharge, poor grading and runoff along slab edges all feed it.

Compaction and fill

Backfill placed against a foundation, or trench spoil replaced over a utility line, often settles more than undisturbed ground. A slab poured over it inherits that future movement.

Freeze-thaw and moisture cycling

In a climate with real freeze-thaw cycling, saturated ground beneath a slab is worked repeatedly. That contributes to movement; treating it as the single cause of any specific void would be overstating what can be known from a distance.

Signs a void may exist — and their limits

  • A slab that has dropped relative to slabs beside it.
  • Slight movement or flex underfoot or under a vehicle wheel.
  • Cracking that appears along an unsupported line.
  • Water disappearing at a joint rather than running off.
  • Soil visibly washing out at a slab edge.

These are reasons to have the slab evaluated. They are not confirmation.

About tapping and listening

A hollow sound is often cited as a homeowner test for voids. It is not reliable — slab thickness, reinforcement and what lies immediately beneath all change how concrete sounds. A homeowner cannot reliably confirm a void by sound alone, and nobody should base a repair decision on it.

How voids are investigated

Practically, providers combine visual assessment, elevation observations across the slab and adjacent slabs, drainage context, and what they encounter when they begin injecting — material take is itself information about the space that exists. On larger or more complex projects, more formal investigation methods exist and may be recommended by an engineer. What is appropriate depends on the project; we will not present a single method as standard practice.

Filling and stabilization, and how they relate to lifting

Filling a void means occupying the space so the slab is supported again. Lifting means continuing to inject after the space is full so the slab rises. They are two ends of the same operation, which is why the distinction matters when you read a quote: filling without lifting is a legitimate scope when the slab's elevation is acceptable, and it is normally less work than a lift.

Both polyurethane and cement-based slurries are used to fill voids. Which is proposed depends on the void's size and shape, the slab, the ground and access — not on a universal rule. Not every void needs polyurethane foam.

Limitations worth understanding

  • Filling a void does not stop the process that created it.
  • If water keeps moving material, support can be lost again — drainage is part of the real fix.
  • Void filling does not repair concrete that has already broken up.
  • It does not correct site grading, and it does not make a slab drain in a direction it was never built to drain.

Homeowner questions

Can a void be filled without lifting the slab?

Yes. Where the slab is still at an acceptable elevation, filling and supporting it can be the whole objective.

How large are these voids usually?

It varies enormously, and that is exactly why material volume — and therefore cost — is hard to predict before work starts. A provider who explains this rather than quoting a precise material figure is being straight with you.

Will filling the void fix my drainage?

No. It restores support beneath the slab. Where water is the cause, the drainage itself needs attention as a separate item.
