Driveway Apron Leveling: When the Slab at the Garage Drops

The apron is the short slab between your driveway and your garage floor. It settles more often than the rest of the drive, and it produces a distinctive set of symptoms: a step at the garage line, a widening gap, a bump as you drive in, and water collecting exactly where you least want it.

Why this slab in particular

Three things stack up at the garage line. The apron commonly sits over ground that was excavated and backfilled during construction, so it rests on material that was disturbed rather than undisturbed. Every vehicle entering the garage loads that same short span. And roof runoff frequently discharges near the garage corner, sending water into exactly that backfill.

Meanwhile the garage slab behind it usually stays put. So the difference between the two becomes visible quickly — a slab that has dropped half an inch reads as an obvious step when the surface next to it has not moved at all.

A slab that has lost support can feel or sound different underfoot — a reason to have it looked at, not a diagnosis.

Support loss under an apron

The mechanism is usually straightforward: water enters the backfill near the garage, moves fine material, and a space opens beneath the apron. The slab is then spanning instead of resting, and vehicle loads push it into that space. Restoring the elevation without filling the space would simply set the sequence up to repeat, which is why lifting work on an apron is really void-filling work that happens to end with a lift.

Leveling options for an apron

Both established methods are used on aprons. Polyurethane injection is often discussed for this slab because the ports are small, the material is light on backfilled ground and the set is fast — useful when you need to park that evening. A cement-based slurry is also used and is generally the lower-cost material per square foot. Which suits your apron depends on the void, the ground beneath it and access.

When replacement may be more appropriate

  • The apron has broken into several pieces rather than simply dropped.
  • Edges are crumbling where they meet the garage slab or the driveway.
  • The slab has been lifted before and has moved again substantially.
  • The garage entry needs to be re-graded to change how water behaves, not just re-leveled.
A specific vertical drop does not automatically mean leveling, and it does not automatically mean replacement. Half an inch on a fragmenting slab and two inches on an intact one point in different directions. That judgment belongs to an onsite evaluation.

Is the apron the same as the driveway?

It is part of the driveway, but it behaves as its own slab: shorter span, backfilled ground beneath, concentrated wheel loads and roof water nearby. That is why it settles first on many homes.

Can the gap at my garage be filled instead of lifting the slab?

Sealing a joint addresses appearance and water entry at the surface; it does not restore elevation or support. If the apron has tilted and lost support, filling the gap alone leaves the underlying condition in place.

Will lifting the apron fix my garage door seal?

It can help where the seal no longer meets the concrete because the slab has tilted. It is not a door repair, and the door hardware itself may still need attention.

How large a job is this normally?
