Concrete Leveling vs Replacement

Lifting a slab and replacing it solve different problems. Lifting corrects position; replacement gives you new concrete. If the slab itself is failing, no amount of lifting fixes that — and if the slab is sound, replacement is usually the more expensive way to reach the same result.

Start with the slab, not the price

The first question is not which option costs less. It is whether the concrete is worth keeping. A slab that has dropped as a unit and is otherwise sound is a lifting candidate. A slab that has broken into pieces, spalled widely or lost its surface is a replacement candidate regardless of what lifting would cost.

The second question is what caused the movement. If water is still carrying material away beneath the slab, both options are exposed to the same risk — new concrete over the same unaddressed condition can settle too.

Lifting is usually the better spend when

  • The concrete is intact and in decent condition for its age.
  • The problem is elevation, a trip offset, or drainage that reversed.
  • You are satisfied with the slab's size, shape and finish.
  • Downtime matters — a shared walkway, a working driveway, a business entrance.
  • Budget is a real constraint and the slab is serviceable.

Replacement deserves serious consideration when

  • The slab is fragmented, crumbling, or the surface has widely deteriorated.
  • You want a different layout, width, slope, or a drain that does not exist.
  • The slab has already been lifted and has moved substantially again.
  • Reinforcement or thickness appears inadequate for the loads it carries.
  • The work is part of a larger project that involves removing the slab anyway.
Where the underlying ground condition is the real issue, neither option is complete on its own. Drainage correction, grading, or a qualified engineering opinion may be the part that determines whether the repair holds.

Questions worth asking any provider

Homeowner questions

Is leveling always cheaper than replacement?

For comparable area it is generally a fraction of replacement cost, but it is only the better value when the slab is worth keeping. Lifting concrete that needs replacing is money spent twice.

Does lifting a slab weaken it?

The objective is to restore support beneath the slab. Small injection holes are patched. Whether a specific slab is a suitable candidate is an onsite judgement.
